By CHARLIE De BIASE JR.
Senior Bleron Lata poured in a team-high 21 points, including five three-pointers, as Susan Wagner held off a late surge by host Tottenville to record a 60-59 PSAL triumph Monday in Huguenot.
The Falcons, who improved to 2-2 overall, also received 11 points apiece from Matt Cruz (above, left; three treys) and Fredrick Jenkins.
Frank Barbato scored a career-high 24 points for the Pirates, including three shots from behind the arc. Dmari Smith added 18.
The Falcons rode the scoring of Justin Mason, Mychal Mondone and Lata to a 21-14 lead after a period and although the Pirates cut their deficit to two (29-27) at intermission, Lata and Cruz combined for three treys in the third as SW went into the third with a 44-35 advantage.
Wagner, in fact, owned a 58-48 lead late when the Pirates went on a 9-0 run to cut SW's lead to a point. Barbato, who had 11 points in the final period, was 7 for 8 from the free-throw line in the fourth.
However, the Falcons' Marlon Matute finally broke the spell with a pair of freebies. Tottenville hit a layup with two seconds left to provide the final score.
