Susan Wagner repeats as PSAL boys’ city bowling champions with 2-0 win over Tottenville

By Nick Regina |

Susan Wagner cruised to its second consecutive PSAL city crown with Friday’s 2-0 win over No. 1 Tottenville at Showplace Bowling and Entertainment Center.

The No. 2 Falcons 8-5 record during the regular season wasn’t quite indicative of the team’s talent level, which was on full display during the A match, in which SW downed the Pirates 916-825, before pulling out an 860-634 triumph in the B.

Six of the Falcons eight bowlers cracked the 200 pin mark in the victory: Anthony Deleon (248), Nick Vollaro (242), Alex Santos (241), Brandon Handog (236), Bobby Pepe (212), and Steven Souffrin (212).

In defeat, Jason Wichnovitz (227), Fischer Virginia (220), and Gregory Pasquale (220) paced Tottenville.

“It’s absolutely incredible,” said SW coach Tim McAuliffe of his team’s effort. “They simply would not be denied, to beat a team as as Tottenville, the highest averages in the city, it takes greatness to beat a great team.”

McAuliffe believes his team was its best down the stretch of the season.

“This team gets better the longer the season goes,” pointed out McAuliffe. “They stayed relaxed and pure and let the game takeover.

“We knew we’d have to take it up a notch every single match if we wanted to be champions again, and these Falcons were up to the task,” he added.

McAuliffe lauded the efforts of senior team captain Bobby Pepe, who he referred to as the team’s “spokesman”.

“I told them to bowl their best and always support each other and go out and have fun,” said Pepe. “To win two in a row is the greatest feeling and these guys are gonna keep on winning more...I’m so proud of my team.”

“We thought about how the season went and we picked it up [down the stretch],” added Nick Vollaro. “We tried our best in practice everyday and we deserve it...[Tottenville] is a good team, but we came out on top today.”
