Susan Wagner heading to flag football title game

Susan Wagner and Tottenville met in the PSAL girls’ flag football semifinals on Wednesday, assuring that Staten Island would be represented in the city title game for a fourth straight year, though it was the Falcons who emerged victorious and earned their place in the championship with a 6-0 win in overtime.

The Falcons will meet DeWitt Clinton in the title bout, though a date has not yet been announced.
Jillian DeGeorge linked up with Nicole Baerga from five-yards out to pull ahead on Wednesday, as Susan Wagner recorded its third shutout of the playoffs.

The Falcons defense pulled 28 flags, and Sabrina Yakush’s late interception cemented the victory.

“The girls have been working hard all season for games like this,” said SW coach Bashkim Pelinkovic. "I’m proud of their resolves and their refusal to quit. They remained focused and made play after play on both sides of the ball.

“We knew it would be a tough game," he added. “Tottenville is a very talented team and we know they weren’t going to give us anything easy...we spent the last few days preparing and it paid off in the end.”

As for the impending title bout, Pelinkovic’s club will enjoy their latest victory before getting right back to practice.

“We are excited about the opportunity of playing in the championship and representing the Island,” said Pelinkovic. “The girls will enjoy the victory tonight and then go back to work tomorrow. We are aware that preparation will help us get to the place we want to be.”
