HS baseball playoff roundup: Susan Wagner, Tottenville, New Dorp moving on in PSAL AAA circuit

By Nick Regina |

No. 12 Susan Wagner saw its ace Kevin Walters carry a no-hit bid into the seventh inning as the Falcons pulled out the 1-0 triumph over No. 21 Stuyvesant.

Walters was dominant on the bump -- carrying a perfect game into the sixth inning before losing the no-no in the final frame. He struck out eight and walked just one along the way.

“He was lights out,” said SW coach Danny Pesce. “Both teams were very good defensively.”

SW churned out one run in the very first inning -- and though the Falcons did not plate another run in the contest, they nevertheless emerged victorious.

Dylan Whyte and John Vitucci teamed for four of the club’s five hits -- each stroking base-knocks in the opening frame, while it was Whyte who plated Vitucci for the game’s only run.

Now, the Falcons, who have won 10 of their last 12 contests, will meet No. 5 Tottenville in the second round on Friday in Huguenot.

The teams split a pair of regular season contests last week.

“All the kids know each other and how they play,” said Pesce of the Island rivalry. “It should be another good game...we seem to always play one-run games, that’s our m.o. Hopefully, it will be another good game."
