Susan Wagner went on the road as an underdog Tuesday evening but came away with an 80-69 victory over Thomas Edison in the opening round of the PSAL A playoffs in Queens.
The win earned the No. 35 seeded Falcons a second-round playoff date with No. 3 Beacon Thursday at 5 p.m. It will be a rematch of a Feb. 2 contest that coach Joe Coscia’s club lost 63-57.
Against No. 30-seeded Edison Tuesday, Bleron Lata scored 23 of his team-high 25 points in the second half, including a 30-foot, 3-pointer in the fourth quarter that helped the Falcons stay in control. Lata added eight assists.
The Falcons led by three points at the half, but outscored the Inventors, 22-14, in the third quarter to take an 11-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Falcons led by as many as 18 points in the final stanza and would hold off a late surge for the win.
SW got 17 points from Kai Mercado, who grabbed seven rebounds. Justin Mason added 14 points and would at one point score 10 consecutive points in the third quarter.
