Joe Ryan Memorial Committee makes annual donations to HS sports programs

The Joe Ryan Memorial Committee on Tuesday presented donations to the athletic programs of five Staten Island high schools during a ceremony at the Staten Island Advance, Grasmere.

The committee has been recognizing the athletic directors of area high schools and their dedication to students and the community for 15 years.

Ryan, who died in 2003 at age 68, was instrumental in starting varsity football programs at Susan Wagner and St. Joseph-by-the-Sea High Schools. The field at St. Joseph-by-the-Sea is named in his honor.

The mission of the committee is to commemorate Ryan's life and accomplishments by presenting awards to groups and individuals who have made significant contributions to Staten Island sports and the community over a period of time.

The donations are given out in recognition of these accomplishments.

On Tuesday money awards were given out to the athletic directors of Tottenville (Jim Munson), Notre Dame Academy (Nick Senise), New Dorp (Richie Rucierto), Petrides (Anthony Tabbitas and Mike Duffy) and Susan Wagner (Scott McBratney).

Since the Joe Ryan Memorial Committee was founded in 2004, the organization has given out more than $139,000 in donations to different high school sports departments on Staten Island.

The donations were handed out by Jerry Ryan, the committee chairperson and brother of Joe Ryan, and fellow committee members Joe Sollazzo, George Healey, Mike Lapetina, Bill Rogers, Bob Ryan and Art Truscelli.
