Top-seeded and unbeaten Susan Wagner advanced to the semifinals of the PSAL flag football playoffs with a 24-6 home victory over No. 9 James Madison on Tuesday.
The Falcons (12-1), who got three interceptions from Lauren Persichetty including a 60-yard pick six late in the game, will meet No. 4 Clinton on Thursday at Aviator at 4 p.m. The other semifinal at the same site at 6 p.m. is an all-Island matchup between No. 2 Tottenville and No. 6 New Dorp.
The Falcons advanced with defense as Alexis Crescitelli, Abigail Hughes and Sabrina Yakush combined for 20 pulled flags, six sacks and one interception
Kayla Collins, Persichetty and Yakush combined for 145 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Despite throwing three early interceptions, Jillian Degeorge remained composed and finished with 187 yards passing and three touchdowns.
Madison struck first, but five plays later, Degeorge found a streaking Persichetty for a 27-yard touchdown to even the score. The rest of the first half remained scoreless.
In the second half, the Falcons marched down the field and eventually found the end zone on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Degeorge to Yakush.
After a 35-yard Pelinkovic punt pinned the Knights inside the five, they were forced to run three plays and give the ball back to the Falcons. Making the most of their field position, Degeorge hooked up with Collins on a 15-yard pass and put the home team 18-6.
With less than two minutes remaining in the second half, Persichetty capped the scoring with her interception return.
